If you're looking for a new way to get active that's fun, social, and easy to learn, it's time to discover Pickleball. Once considered a backyard game, its popularity has exploded, and it’s thriving right here at the East Grinstead Sports Club.
A unique blend of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, Pickleball is perfect for women of all ages and fitness levels. We spoke to local player Karen Tyrrell to find out why she loves it.

Full-Body Fitness Without Feeling Intimidated
One of the biggest draws of Pickleball is that it’s a fantastic workout that doesn't feel like one. It's low-impact and accessible, making it gentle on the joints while still delivering great health benefits.
"Pickleball is a great workout," Karen says. "It involves fast footwork, quick reflexes, and constant movement which will improve cardiovascular health, boost agility, and strengthen the core, legs, and upper body. It's easier on the joints than tennis and is ideal for women who want to stay active without the risk of injury."
A Powerful Mood Booster and Social Connector
Beyond the physical perks, Pickleball is a powerful way to boost mental wellbeing and build new friendships.
"Playing 'pickle' is a powerful mood booster, and I find myself smiling as soon as I am on the court - it's such a good laugh," Karen shares. "I've formed many new friends, and I know for some of the ladies that play, it has helped them combat isolation and loneliness. It's very inclusive, friendly, and such good fun; we regularly have grandparents playing with their grandchildren."

A Fair and Affordable Game for Everyone
You don't need to be a seasoned athlete to enjoy Pickleball. The rules are designed to make it a fair and enjoyable game for everyone.
"Pickleball is a great leveller as you don't need to be strong or tall," Karen explains. "Whether you're 25 or 75, you can still grab a paddle and step onto the court."
How You Can Get Involved
The best part is how easy it is to give it a try. The club is incredibly welcoming to newcomers.
"Come and find us at EGSC on Thursdays for beginners from 10am to 12," says Karen. "Your first trial session is free, and we have all the equipment and free coaching. We often have coffee afterward up in the bar, so it's a great chance to have a natter and catch up. I love it, and I can't imagine now not playing!"
