Why I Left My Career During Menopause - And What Came Next

From PR to Health Coaching – and why Menopause was the turning point

Before becoming a Health Coach, I built a successful career in PR and marketing. It was fast-paced, creative, and fulfilling—until, suddenly, it wasn’t. I made the difficult decision to step away, not fully understanding why I felt so out of sync with myself. Only later did I realise menopause was quietly shaping everything—my energy, my confidence, even my ability to cope.

An Unexpected Turning Point

Like many women, I had no idea what was really happening. Menopause doesn’t send a polite warning. It arrives uninvited and undefined, often just as life throws its own curveballs. For me, that included caring for my beloved father in his final years, an emotional and physically draining journey.

I now know I was one of the 1 in 10 women who leave their jobs because of menopause. At the time, I just felt lost-anxious, exhausted and resenting the way I felt. The confidence I’d always relied on seemed to vanish overnight.

Looking back, I realise how underprepared I was. The symptoms, the overwhelm, the loss of 'me'-it was a shock. I searched for answers but at that time found very little clear or compassionate guidance, and for every woman the menopause experience is very different. It was isolating and frustrating. But that search became a turning point.

Finding a New Path

What began as a personal quest for understanding and support led me to retrain as a Health Coach. It was the best decision I could have made. I’ve always loved exercise and wellbeing, and this new path brought everything together-my personal experience, my passion for health, and my desire to help others feel informed and empowered.

Since qualifying, I’ve had the opportunity to host "My Health Matters" on our local radio Meridian FM, where I have met many other inspiring women from all backgrounds and ages who are committed to their wellbeing and in helping others. It’s shown me just how many of us are seeking connection, guidance, and real conversations about health.

Why I Support HerMove

That’s also why I wanted to support HerMove. I know firsthand how transformative being active can be—I love going to classes such Les Mills Bodypump or pilates or a Spin class not just for physical and mental wellbeing but for fun and friendship.

HerMove’s mission to help women feel strong, seen, and supported through exercise deeply resonates with me. It’s about reclaiming our energy and our confidence, especially during times like menopause when both can feel in short supply.
