At HerMove, we are dedicated to supporting the confidence and development of girls in sport. Our recent collaboration with Lingfield College and PEBE for a sports-bra education and fitting event was a highlight for us. It provided a vital space for students to explore the importance of comfort, support, and body confidence in physical activity.
During that session, we were incredibly impressed by one student in particular: Jemima. Her enthusiasm, maturity, and passion for girls' sport stood out immediately. We are delighted to share her story here, a powerful reflection on resilience, friendship, and the joy she has found through netball.
By Jemima
I joined my first netball team in Year 3, inspired by my older sister who played for our local club and loved it. At first, I played alongside many of my primary school friends in a local league. However, in Year 7 I decided I needed a challenge, so I moved to a more competitive team: one that would push me further and help me develop my skills to a higher level.
With my new team, I competed in the Kent County League and the Northwest Kent League. These experiences strengthened both my ability and confidence greatly as a player. When I joined Lingfield College in Year 9, one of the first things I did was sign up for the school netball team. That season, I was honoured to receive the "Most Improved Player" award at the summer sports awards. The following year, I was incredibly proud to be selected as captain for the Year 10 season: an opportunity that allows me to grow as a player and work on leadership skills.
What I enjoy most about netball is the training sessions. They give me the chance to unwind, release energy, and spend time with friends. Netball has helped me form friendships with people I might never have met otherwise, especially girls I do not share lessons with or go to the same school as. The matches are equally exciting, particularly the close, competitive games where every pass and goal counts.
Above all, netball has taught me resilience. It has shown me the importance of perseverance, to keep pushing even when things feel difficult, and the value of teamwork and communication. I have learned that success only comes with trust and communicating clearly, especially when defending. This is a skill that I take beyond the court.
One of my proudest achievements was when my team, an Under 14 team, won the County Under 15 League. I also treasure the memories from the annual "Colours" tournament at the end of the season. Last year, our team was given Uganda, wearing red, black, and yellow. We had so much fun playing many matches together with face paint and accessories.
Another unforgettable moment was during a school netball tour to Málaga, when we reached the finals of a tournament playing with schools from all around England. I scored a goal from the edge of the D and saw my friends cheering for me in the stands. It is a memory I will always hold onto.
If I were encouraging another girl to try netball or any sport, I would say: have confidence and do not be intimidated about joining a new team. You never know what opportunities might come your way.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Jemima’s journey is a brilliant reminder of why we do what we do. Sport is not just about the final score: it is about the friendships made, the leadership skills developed, and the resilience built for life.
